LINCOLN HISTORY
Abraham Lincoln was born to parents
Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln in the new log cabin they had purchased in
December of 1808. Thomas paid cash for the home in Hodgenville, Kentucky
called the Sinking Springs Farm. **586 1/2 acres** Our 16th President
was born February 12, 1809. Two years later the family would move to the
Knob Creek farm near by. Indiana and Illinois would also be home in the
next 17 years. Abraham's first home after he left home at age 19 would
be New Salem. He would stay there and work at many jobs. Store
clerk, store owner, surveyor, politician,
postmaster, laborer, and many others. The study of law was one of the
last things he did in New Salem. After passing the exam to practice law
in Illinois, he moved to Springfield to practice there. The Lincoln
Douglas debates of 1858 during the Senate Race, would place Lincoln's
name before the entire nation. A speech at Cooper Union, New York and a
picture by Mathew Brady would again place his name and face before the
country again. In Chicago, at the Republican Convention, He was
selected by his party to run for the Presidency in 1860. Taking office
on March the 4th, 1861, President Lincoln would become the 16th
President and the First Republican to ever hold that office. |
